Note: The following text is being used with permission from the Enneagram Professional Training Program of Helen Palmer and David Daniels, M.D.

The Romantic believes you must obtain the longed for ideal relationship or situation to be loved. Consequently, Romantics are idealistic, deeply feeling, empathetic, authentic to self, but also dramatic, moody, and sometimes self-absorbed.

Abbreviated Version of the Basic Proposition:

The original ideal state of deep connection to all things [the Holy Idea of Origin or Source] goes into the background in a world that you perceived abandons you, leaving something important missing. Consequently, you come to believe that you can regain the lost original ideal love or situation by finding that love or situation which is unique, special, and believed to be fulfilling. Concurrently, you develop envy [the Passion] and longing over what is idealized and unavailable. Attention naturally goes to what is missing of importance [the Fixation or Chief Feature of Melancholy].

Description of Key Characteristics:

World causes loss of original ideal state or person (abandonment theme).

Essence qualities of equanimity and original whole state go into background.

Assures love and connection by becoming sufficient and distinctive.

Develops envy of others and longing for what others seem to have.

Attention goes to what is missing of importance (to ultimate ideals).

Avoids being ordinary and then abandoned; being special and unique really matter.

What is present is inferior to what is absent and longed for.

Disappointment occurs in self and others.

Intense feelings=what is real (especially melancholy).

Values authenticity, beauty, sensitivity.
