Note: The following text is being used with permission from the Enneagram Professional Training Program of Helen Palmer and David Daniels, M.D.

The Performer believes you must accomplish and succeed to be loved. Consequently, Performer are industrious, fast-paced, goal-focused, and efficiency-oriented, but also can be inattentive to feelings, impatient, and image-driven.

Abbreviated Version of the Basic Proposition:

The original state of hope [the Holy Idea] wherein things work according to universal law (i.e. are not dependent on the effort of the doer) goes into the background in a world that you perceive rewards doing, not being. Consequently, you come to believe that you can gain love, acceptance, and recognition through performance, doing and success. Concurrently, you develop a go-ahead energy of self-deception [the Passion of Deceit] in order to match to an image of success and approval [the Fixation or Chief Feature of Vanity].
